Waiting too long to repaint your exterior causes substrate damage that triples the cost. Here are the 5 signs that mean repaint now, not later.
Sign 1: Peeling, Blistering, or Cracking Paint
Paint peels when moisture gets trapped behind the paint film. Blistering is the early stage; peeling is active failure; cracking and flaking mean the substrate is exposed to weather. At this stage, you're not just painting — you're protecting your siding from rot and moisture damage. Every month you wait, the damage spreads.
Sign 2: Fading More Than 30%
UV exposure fades exterior paint over 5-10 years. Moderate fading is cosmetic. When a color has lost more than 30% of its original depth, the pigment binders that protect the surface from UV are also depleted. The paint is no longer doing its protective job — it's just decoration.
Sign 3: Chalking
Run your finger along an exterior wall. White chalk on your finger means the paint binders have broken down and the pigment is chalking off. Light chalking is normal on older paint. Heavy chalking means the paint is failing at the surface level and needs replacement.
Sign 4: Visible Mold or Mildew
Green or black streaking on exterior surfaces that bleach won't permanently remove indicates moisture infiltration. Painting over mold without treating the source is pointless — it'll return within a season. We identify moisture sources, treat with mildewcide, and address the underlying cause before repainting.
Sign 5: It's Been More Than 10 Years
High-quality exterior paint from a professional contractor should last 8-12 years in PA. If it's been more than 10 years, schedule a walk-around inspection regardless of appearance. Surfaces protected by overhangs may look fine while south-facing walls are failing. Pro evaluation is free with us.
