Before: 1990s honey oak cabinets, dated hardware. After: sprayed Sherwin-Williams Dovetail SW-7018 gray with new pulls. Easton, PA.
The Challenge
This Easton kitchen had classic 1990s honey oak cabinets — the kind that were everywhere between 1988 and 2005. Solid construction, quality wood, but the orange undertone aged the kitchen dramatically. Full replacement was quoted at $28,000; cabinet painting at $2,400.
Our Process
We removed all doors, drawers, and hardware. Sanded everything to 180 grit, filled all grain and imperfections with grain filler, sanded again, applied oil-based primer, and then sprayed two coats of Sherwin-Williams Dovetail (SW-7018) in a semi-gloss finish. New brushed nickel hardware from the homeowners completed the look.
The Result
The result looked like a full kitchen renovation at a fraction of the cost. The homeowners said three visitors assumed they had gotten new cabinets. Total project: $2,400 labor and materials. Time: 3 days (day 1 removal and prep, day 2 prime and first coat, day 3 second coat and reinstallation).
