Before: yellowed, dingy flat white trim throughout a 1980s colonial. After: crisp Benjamin Moore Advance in Chantilly Lace. Bethlehem, PA.
The Challenge
This 3,000 sq ft Bethlehem colonial had original 1985 trim — oil-based flat white that had yellowed to a cream-with-gray undertone over 40 years. The homeowners had repainted the walls several times but never tackled the trim. It was making the fresh walls look dull by comparison.
Our Process
Trim painting in an occupied home requires different technique than new construction. We lightly sanded all trim to create adhesion (original oil-based paint doesn't accept new paint without it), spot-primed any bare spots with oil-based primer, and applied two coats of Benjamin Moore Advance in Chantilly Lace (OC-65) in semi-gloss. Advance is a waterborne alkyd that levels like oil but cleans up with water.
The Result
The difference was immediate — crisp white trim made every room feel cleaner and brighter. Advance self-levels beautifully, eliminating brush marks visible in the original flat-applied trim. Total: $3,200 for all trim, doors, and baseboards throughout the home. 4 days with a 2-person crew.
