Ideal Conditions for Exterior Painting
Exterior paint needs temperatures between 50-90 degrees Fahrenheit, relative humidity below 70%, no rain for 24 hours before or after painting, and no direct blazing sun on the surface being painted. In the Lehigh Valley, these conditions are most reliably found in late spring and early fall.
Best Months in the Lehigh Valley
May and June: Ideal. Temperatures are mild, humidity is manageable, and daylight hours are long. This is our busiest booking period - schedule early.
September and October: Excellent. Temperatures drop back to ideal range after summer heat. Lower humidity than summer. Excellent adhesion conditions. Many homeowners prefer fall painting because it protects wood through the harsh PA winter.
July and August: Possible but challenging. High temperatures cause paint to dry too fast before it can bond properly. Direct summer sun bakes paint before it cures. We schedule summer exterior work early morning and adjust techniques for heat.
November: Possible in mild years with careful product selection. We use cold-weather exterior formulas that cure at lower temperatures. This is a judgment call made project-by-project.
December through March: We do not paint exteriors. Freezing temperatures prevent proper curing, and moisture from snow and ice causes immediate adhesion failure.
Can You Paint Exterior in Winter in PA?
No. PA winters are too cold and wet for any exterior paint product to cure correctly. Any painter who tells you otherwise is either going to deliver a failed paint job or paint on the rare 50-degree days that we do sometimes see in January and February. We don't take those risks with your home.
When to Book
Spring and early fall exterior slots fill 6-8 weeks in advance. If you want May or September work, contact us in March or July respectively.
