Paint Finishes Guide: Which Sheen for Which Room

By Joseph Assise III  |  April 2026  |  Easton, PA

The sheen of paint affects how light bounces off the wall, how easy the wall is to clean, and how much surface imperfections are visible. Choosing the wrong finish is one of the most common - and most correctable - mistakes in interior painting.

Which Finish for Which Room

Flat / Matte: Ceilings (universally), formal living and dining rooms with plaster walls in good condition, accent walls where you want the color to appear richest. Not recommended for rooms with children or in kitchens/bathrooms.

Eggshell: The workhorse finish. Bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, hallways. Slight sheen makes it cleanable while still looking refined. The most commonly recommended finish for main living areas.

Satin: Kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, kids' rooms. Better washability for spaces that see moisture, grease, or frequent cleaning. Also good for trim in lower-traffic homes.

Semi-Gloss: All trim and doors (baseboards, window casings, door frames, crown molding). Bathrooms and kitchens where high moisture exists. Creates crisp contrast between wall and trim colors.

Gloss: Front doors, kitchen cabinets, furniture. The hardest finish, the shiniest, and the one that shows every surface imperfection most clearly.

The Ceiling Rule

Almost every professional painter uses flat paint on ceilings. The low angle of light hitting a ceiling reveals every roller texture, joint compound seam, and popcorn remnant. A flat finish absorbs that light rather than reflecting it, making the ceiling look smooth. The only exception is high-moisture areas (some bathrooms) where a matte or eggshell ceiling paint is used.
