Painting Trim, Baseboards & Crown Molding: A Professional Guide
Clean trim lines are one of the clearest signs of a professional paint job. When trim paint is sloppy - bleeding onto walls, leaving brush marks, or showing through multiple coats - it undermines an otherwise good paint job. Here's how we do it right.
Best Paint for Trim and Baseboards
Trim requires a harder, more scrubbable finish than walls. We use semi-gloss for most trim applications and gloss for front doors and cabinetry. Oil-based alkyd paint has historically been the professional choice for trim because it levels beautifully and dries to a very hard film. Waterborne alkyds (like Benjamin Moore Advance or Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane) now offer the same hardness and leveling with easier cleanup and lower VOC.
The Trim Painting Process
- Fill nail holes with lightweight spackle or painter's putty
- Sand smooth with 120-150 grit, then wipe clean
- Caulk the seam between trim and wall (this is critical for a crisp line)
- Prime bare wood or previously unpainted trim
- Cut in with a quality 2" angled brush, keeping a wet edge
- Apply 2 coats with light sanding between coats (220 grit)
Cutting In at the Wall/Trim Junction
The cleanest line at the wall-trim junction comes from caulking and then cutting in freehand with a good brush - not from tape. Painter's tape rarely produces a clean line on textured walls because the tape doesn't fully seal to the texture, allowing paint to bleed under. A skilled painter with a quality angled sash brush can cut a cleaner line freehand in half the time it takes to tape.
Baseboards vs. Crown Molding vs. Chair Rail
| Trim Type | Typical Sheen | Color |
|---|---|---|
| Baseboards | Semi-gloss | White or trim color |
| Crown molding | Semi-gloss | Usually white to blend with ceiling |
| Window trim | Semi-gloss | Match baseboards |
| Door trim / casing | Semi-gloss to gloss | Match window trim |
Trim painting is included in most of our interior painting packages. We can also paint trim-only for clients who want to refresh the woodwork without repainting walls. Get a free estimate today.
