Baseboard Painting Done Right

Baseboards look sharp when the floor edge is protected, the top joint is caulked, old enamel is sanded, and two coats of a hard, washable finish go on. Because baseboards sit where vacuums and shoes hit, a durable enamel such as Benjamin Moore Advance or Scuff-X is the usual choice.

How Are Floors and Carpet Protected Along Baseboards?

Most of the effort on baseboards is masking. Hard floors are taped along the base so the cut line is crisp, and carpet is tucked down with a guard or taped back so bristles never touch fibers. Drop cloths cover the floor in front of the work, and dust from sanding is vacuumed before any paint opens.

What Prep Do Baseboards Need?

Which Paint Holds Up Best on Baseboards?

Two products show what to look for. Benjamin Moore's Advance is a waterborne alkyd enamel listed for doors, trim and cabinets that dries to a tough, washable finish. Its Scuff-X satin is a single-component latex engineered for high-traffic commercial spaces and lists interior doors, trim, cabinets and walls as uses. Either is sturdier than wall paint where vacuums and shoes make contact.

How Long Before Furniture Can Go Back?

Benjamin Moore lists Advance at 4 to 6 hours to touch and 16 hours to recoat, with heavy abrasion avoided for at least 5 to 7 days. Scuff-X is listed at 1 hour to touch and 2 to 3 hours to recoat, and painted surfaces can be washed after two weeks. Furniture can usually go back against baseboards once they are dry to the touch, but avoid pushing pieces tight against them for the first several days.

Do Baseboards in Older Homes Need Lead-Safe Work?

In homes built before 1978, original baseboards may carry lead-based paint under newer layers. Sanding them disturbs that paint, and the EPA rule applies to paid work disturbing more than 6 square feet of paint per room, which baseboards around a single room can exceed. The rule requires an EPA-certified firm, containment and a verified cleanup.

How Much Paint Does a Room of Baseboard Take?

Very little. A 12 by 14 foot room has about 52 linear feet of baseboard. At a 5 inch height that is roughly 22 square feet per coat, or about 44 square feet for two coats. Benjamin Moore lists its Advance enamel at 400 to 500 square feet per gallon, so a quart covers a room with plenty to spare. Masking floors and cutting a straight line are where the time goes.

Why Does Paint Peel Off Baseboards?

Most baseboard peeling comes from painting over a surface that was not ready: glossy old enamel that was never dulled, floor-cleaner or wax residue, or dust from the floor. Benjamin Moore's Advance data sheet requires surfaces free of dirt, dust, grease, soap and wax and says glossy areas should be dulled. Cleaning, scuff sanding and a bonding primer prevent it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should baseboards be painted before or after new flooring?

Ideally after the floor is installed and the shoe molding is set, with a final coat once everything is in place. Painting first means the installer's tools scuff fresh paint and new gaps appear at the floor line. If new floors are planned, a practical sequence is prime and first coat early, install the floor, then caulk and apply the final coat.

What sheen is best for baseboards?

Semi-gloss or satin. Higher sheen wipes clean more easily, which matters where mops and shoes leave marks, while satin hides small dents and grain in older woodwork. Benjamin Moore offers its Advance trim enamel in satin and semi-gloss and Scuff-X in satin and semi-gloss. Matching the sheen used on doors and casings keeps the trim consistent.

Can baseboards be painted without removing carpet?

Yes. Carpet is protected by tucking the edge down with a carpet guard or tape so the paint brush never touches fibers, and the floor is covered with drop cloths. Removing baseboards is not necessary for repainting. Cutting in carefully along a taped or tucked edge gives a clean line without pulling up flooring.

How many coats do baseboards need?

Two coats of finish are standard, plus primer on any bare wood, repairs or a significant color change. Benjamin Moore recommends priming new surfaces fully and spot priming previously painted ones as needed. A second coat evens out sheen and covers brush marks, which show more on semi-gloss than on flatter finishes.
