Paint Finishes Explained: Which Sheen Is Right for Every Surface?

Paint sheen (finish level) is one of the most important and most misunderstood decisions in any painting project. Here's exactly which finish to use where, and why.

Flat/Matte Finish

Best for: ceilings, master bedrooms, formal living rooms, any room with wall imperfections. Flat paint hides imperfections better than any other finish because it diffuses light rather than reflecting it. The downside: flat paint is harder to clean. Scrubbing often damages the paint film. Pro tip: never use flat paint in kitchens, bathrooms, or kids' rooms.

Eggshell Finish

Best for: most interior walls - living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, hallways. Eggshell offers a subtle low sheen that is significantly more washable than flat while still hiding imperfections reasonably well. This is our most commonly applied interior finish. For most Lehigh Valley homes, eggshell on walls is the correct answer.

Satin Finish

Best for: high-traffic areas, kids' rooms, kitchens where you don't want semi-gloss, family rooms. Satin is more durable and washable than eggshell and resists moisture better. The slight sheen is noticeable but not distracting. Satin shows wall imperfections more than eggshell - walls should be properly prepped.

Semi-Gloss Finish

Best for: trim, doors, window frames, bathrooms, kitchen walls near cooking areas. Semi-gloss is highly washable, moisture-resistant, and creates clear visual separation between walls and trim. The significant sheen highlights every imperfection - surfaces must be sanded smooth before painting.

High-Gloss Finish

Best for: cabinets, furniture, exterior doors, architectural accents. High-gloss creates the hardest, most durable, most washable surface. It requires perfectly smooth prep - every flaw will be amplified. We apply high-gloss Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane on cabinets for a finish that rivals factory lacquer.
