What Determines the Cost to Paint a Ceiling?

Ceiling painting cost depends on height and access, texture, stains that need priming, and how much furniture must be moved and covered. Material is a small part: a 12 by 14 foot ceiling is 168 square feet, and two coats of ceiling paint take less than a gallon.

How Do Height and Access Change the Price?

Standard 8 foot ceilings are painted from the floor with an extension pole. Vaulted ceilings, two-story foyers and stairwells need tall ladders, planks or scaffolding, and setting them up safely is often the largest part of the time. Cathedral ceilings also have more area than the floor below them.

Does Texture Make Ceilings More Expensive to Paint?

Yes. Textured and acoustic ceilings absorb more paint and can loosen if rolled heavily, so they are painted more carefully, often sprayed. Benjamin Moore lists its Waterborne Ceiling Paint for drywall, acoustical ceiling tile, cured masonry and plaster at 400 to 450 square feet per gallon, with textured surfaces falling toward the low end.

What If the Ceiling Has Water Stains?

Stains must be sealed before paint or they bleed through. Benjamin Moore lists its alkyd Fresh Start Undercoater and Primer/Sealer for water stains, smoke damage and nicotine, with a 2 hour recoat time. The leak must be fixed and soft drywall replaced first, which adds repair work.

How Much Paint Does a Ceiling Take?

A 12 by 14 foot ceiling is 168 square feet; two coats is 336 square feet, which at 400 to 450 square feet per gallon is under a gallon. A 16 by 20 foot great room ceiling is 320 square feet, about 1.5 gallons for two coats. Benjamin Moore lists its ceiling paint at 1 to 2 hours to recoat at 77°F and 50% humidity.

Why Does Room Clearing Matter?

Everything under a ceiling is in the drip zone. Furniture is moved or covered, floors are fully protected, and light fixtures and smoke detectors are masked or removed. A furnished room takes longer to prepare than an empty one. In pre-1978 homes, ceilings with old painted plaster fall under EPA lead-safe practices when more than 6 square feet of paint per room is disturbed.

Does Ceiling Color or Sheen Change the Cost?

Rarely by much. Flat white is standard because, as the Gypsum Association's GA-214 notes, flat paints reduce joint photographing under critical lighting. A tinted ceiling or a sheen above flat may need a smoother finish level and more careful rolling to avoid lap marks, which adds time rather than material.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much paint does it take to paint a ceiling?

Measure length times width for the ceiling area. A 12 by 14 foot ceiling is 168 square feet, so two coats at the 400 to 450 square feet per gallon Benjamin Moore lists for its Waterborne Ceiling Paint is under a gallon. Textured or acoustic ceilings absorb more, and stain-blocking primer over water marks is extra.

Is it cheaper to paint ceilings with walls?

Usually, because setup and room protection are done once and ceilings are painted first so walls cover any drips at the edges. Painting ceilings separately later means moving and covering furniture again. Many homeowners add ceilings when repainting walls because a fresh wall color makes an old ceiling look dingy.

Why do textured ceilings cost more to paint?

Texture has much more surface than a flat ceiling, absorbs more paint and can loosen if rolled heavily, so it is often sprayed with careful masking. Coverage falls toward the low end of the spread rate. If you are not sure what an older texture contains, have it tested before any scraping.

Can stained ceilings just be painted over?

Not with ordinary paint. Water, smoke and nicotine stains bleed through, so they are sealed first with a stain-blocking primer; Benjamin Moore lists its alkyd Fresh Start Undercoater for water stains and smoke. The leak must be fixed and damaged drywall replaced before priming and painting.
