Painting a single room carries the same setup, protection and cleanup as any job, so per-room cost depends on what is included (walls, ceiling, trim, doors), wall repairs, and whether the color change needs primer. Paint itself is a small part: an average room takes about 2 gallons for two coats on the walls.
Scope is the first thing to define: walls only, or walls plus ceiling, baseboards, casings, doors and closet. Pennsylvania's Home Improvement Consumer Protection Act requires a written contract describing the work and materials, with specifications that cannot change without a written change order signed by both parties.
Fixed steps do not shrink with the room: travel, moving and covering furniture, protecting floors, opening and cleaning tools, and cleanup. Spread over one room instead of several, those steps make up a larger share of the price.

If trim is scuffed or yellowed, painting it with the walls gives clean edges and avoids a second setup. Trim enamel such as Benjamin Moore Advance needs 16 hours between coats, so it can add a day, but it avoids returning later to cut in against fresh wall paint.
In Pennsylvania, the contract must include the contractor's registration number, a description of the work and materials, approximate start and completion dates and the total price, and the homeowner may rescind within three business days. Listing exactly which surfaces are included prevents surprises.
