Dining rooms often have more trim per square foot than any other room: chair rail, wainscot, crown molding and wide casings, often in a second color. Trim detail, deep or two-tone colors, and walls lit by chandeliers and windows are the main cost drivers, more than the room's size.
Chair rail, wainscoting, crown and window casings are cut in by hand and usually painted with a hard enamel such as Benjamin Moore Advance, which needs 16 hours between coats. A two-tone scheme, with one color above the chair rail and another below, doubles the cutting in along every rail.
Often. Deep, rich colors are popular in dining rooms and usually need more coats or a tinted primer. Benjamin Moore notes that certain custom colors require a deep base primer tinted to a special formula, and recommends tinting primer toward the finish color for big color changes.
Chandeliers, sconces and windows throw light across walls at low angles. The Gypsum Association's GA-214 recommends a Level 5 skim coat where severe lighting occurs and says paints with sheen above flat are not recommended over Level 4. Rooms with strong side light and an eggshell or satin finish may need more wall smoothing.
A 12 by 14 foot dining room with 8 foot ceilings has about 416 square feet of wall; with wainscot covering the lower third, the painted wall area above is about 277 square feet, and the wainscot itself is painted as trim. Two coats of wall paint at the 400 to 450 square feet per gallon Benjamin Moore lists for Regal Select comes to under 1.5 gallons in that case.
Original wainscot, chair rail and built-ins in pre-1978 homes may carry old lead paint. Sanding them falls under the EPA rule when more than 6 square feet of painted surface per room is disturbed, which trim-heavy dining rooms reach quickly.
Painted built-ins and wainscot are treated like trim or cabinets and get a hard enamel such as Benjamin Moore Advance, listed for doors, trim and cabinets, with 5 to 7 days before heavy use. If they are stained wood being painted for the first time, a stain-blocking primer such as Fresh Start Undercoater, listed for tannin-rich woods, comes first.

Measure the wall area above any wainscot and multiply by two coats. A 12 by 14 foot room with 8 foot ceilings has about 416 square feet of wall; at 400 to 450 square feet per gallon for Benjamin Moore Regal Select, two coats are about 2 gallons, less if wainscot covers part of the wall. Trim enamel is separate.
It can define the room, but it adds labor: every rail and casing is cut in twice. If the trim is already a clean white and in good shape, painting walls only is faster. A two-tone wall with a chair rail between colors also adds cutting along the rail.
Darker colors and any sheen above flat reveal surface texture under low-angle light from chandeliers and windows. The Gypsum Association's GA-214 recommends a Level 5 skim coat where lighting is severe. A flatter sheen or extra wall smoothing helps deep colors look even.
Walls alone can often be done in a day, but trim-heavy dining rooms take longer because enamel such as Benjamin Moore Advance needs 16 hours between coats. Deep colors may need an extra coat or primer, and wainscot and built-ins add detail work.
