What Determines the Cost to Paint a Garage?

Garage painting cost depends on which of three jobs you want: walls, the concrete floor or the garage door, because each uses different products and prep. Floors take the most preparation and need 3 to 5 days before vehicles return, according to Benjamin Moore's INSL-X GarageGuard data sheet.

How Do Walls, Floors and Doors Differ in Cost?

What Drives the Cost of a Garage Floor Coating?

Preparation. Oil stains and dirt must come out for the coating to bond. Benjamin Moore lists INSL-X GarageGuard 1-Part at 350 to 450 square feet per gallon; a 20 by 20 foot floor is 400 square feet, roughly one gallon per coat. Its data sheet requires at least 50°F, no direct sunlight, no application within 5°F of the dew point and no rain within 12 hours, which can limit scheduling.

Why Do Block Walls Use More Material?

Raw block is porous. Benjamin Moore lists its Ultra Spec Hi-Build Block Filler at only 75 to 100 square feet per gallon. A 20 foot wall 9 feet high is 180 square feet, roughly 1.8 to 2.4 gallons of block filler before any finish coats.

How Does Drywall Finish Affect Garage Wall Cost?

Garage drywall is often left at a basic finish. The Gypsum Association's GA-214 says lower finish levels may be specified in garages where appearance is not the main concern. Bringing walls up to a level suited to painting with a sheen adds taping and sanding.

Do Cure Times Affect the Job?

Yes, for floors. GarageGuard is listed at 8 hours to light foot traffic and 3 to 5 days to vehicle traffic. That downtime, plus moving stored items out and back, is part of planning a floor coating.

What About the Garage Door and Exterior Trim?

Garage doors are exterior surfaces. Benjamin Moore's Aura exterior data sheet calls for cleaning new metal of oil and contaminants and dulling shiny nonferrous metal, and lists Aura as self-priming on nonferrous metal, applied down to 35°F. Wood doors with peeling paint need scraping and priming, and on pre-1978 homes, lead-safe practices apply to exterior paint disturbance over 20 square feet.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long before I can park on a painted garage floor?

Benjamin Moore lists 3 to 5 days before vehicle traffic for its INSL-X GarageGuard 1-Part floor paint at 77°F and 50% humidity, and 8 hours before light foot traffic. Cooler or humid weather extends those times, and hot tires on uncured coating can lift it.

How much floor paint does a two-car garage need?

A 20 by 20 foot floor is 400 square feet. At the 350 to 450 square feet per gallon Benjamin Moore lists for INSL-X GarageGuard, that is roughly one gallon per coat, so about two gallons for two coats, plus extra for rough or porous concrete.

Is it worth painting garage walls?

Painted walls reflect more light and are easier to clean than bare drywall or block. Drywall needs a primer, and block walls need a block filler or masonry primer first. Benjamin Moore lists its block filler at 75 to 100 square feet per gallon because it fills pores, which is why block walls use more material.

Can garage floors be coated in winter?

Only if the garage is warm enough. GarageGuard's data sheet requires at least 50°F air and surface temperature, no application within 5°F of the dew point, and no rain expected within 12 hours. Unheated garages in the Lehigh Valley often fall below that in winter.
