Most trim labor is preparation: cleaning, sanding glossy enamel, filling nail holes, caulking gaps between trim and wall, and priming repairs. Benjamin Moore's Advance data sheet requires surfaces free of dirt, grease, soap and wax and says glossy areas should be dulled. Trim with years of drips and failed caulk takes longer.
Yes. Stained or varnished trim is cleaned, sanded and primed with a stain-blocking primer before paint, because tannin-rich woods bleed through light colors. Benjamin Moore lists its alkyd Fresh Start Undercoater for tannin bleed and tannin-rich woods.
Benjamin Moore lists Advance at 4 to 6 hours to touch and 16 hours to recoat at 77°F and 50% humidity, with 5 to 7 days before heavy abrasion. Two coats on trim usually means at least two visits or days, which is built into scheduling.
In pre-1978 homes, original trim, doors and window sashes are common places for old lead paint, and sanding them disturbs it. Paid work disturbing more than 6 square feet of paint per room falls under the EPA rule, adding containment and cleaning verification.
Usually. One setup covers both, and painting trim and walls in the right order (trim cut lines first or last, depending on approach) avoids cutting in twice. Trim alone still needs the same furniture moving, floor protection and drying time, so bundling it with walls spreads those steps over more work.
