Repaint when the house shows it, not on a fixed schedule. Chalking, fading, cracking, peeling and open caulk joints are the signs, and they appear first on south and west walls and on trim. Catching them early means washing, spot priming and repainting rather than scraping whole walls.
Sun, water and poor preparation. South and west walls get the most UV and heat. Water getting behind paint through open joints or from interior moisture causes peeling. Paint applied over chalk, dirt or loose old coats, or over bare cedar without a stain-suppressing primer, fails early. Products applied outside their temperature range can also underperform.
Yes. Wood moves with moisture and needs the most attention. Fiber cement is dimensionally stable; James Hardie recommends 100% acrylic topcoats. Aluminum holds paint well once chalk is removed. Vinyl is limited to colors with a Light Reflective Value of 57 or higher unless on an approved vinyl palette, per Benjamin Moore. Masonry painted with an elastomeric has a much thicker film.
Usually. When paint is only chalking and fading, a wash, spot prime and two coats renews it. Once peeling is widespread, every loose area must be scraped and primed, and on pre-1978 homes that scraping falls under the EPA lead rule when more than 20 square feet of exterior paint is disturbed, adding containment and cleanup.
Plan inspections in early spring and painting from late spring through early fall. NOAA 1991-2020 normals for Lehigh Valley International Airport put the median last freeze on April 20 and the first on October 24, and many primers need 50°F. See the best time to paint.

There is no single number; it depends on prep, product, color, siding type and sun exposure. South and west walls and horizontal trim wear first. Watch for chalking, fading, cracking and peeling. Repainting when the paint first chalks and fades is easier than waiting for widespread peeling.
Rub a hand on a sunny wall; color on your hand means chalking. Look for fading, cracks, peeling, bare wood on sills and trim, and open caulk joints. Any of these on several walls is a sign to plan a repaint before water gets behind the paint.
Yes, trim often wears faster than siding, especially sills, fascia and door trim. Painting trim alone is a common maintenance step between full repaints. Matching the existing color and sheen matters so the refreshed trim does not make the siding look dull.
Darker colors absorb more heat and tend to fade more visibly than lighter colors, which can make them look worn sooner. On vinyl siding, colors are limited for that reason: Benjamin Moore says not to go below a Light Reflective Value of 57 unless the color is on its approved vinyl palette.
