In an open floor plan, choose one main wall color for the connected space, then add variation in places with natural stopping points: inside corners, trim lines and separate rooms off the main area. Testing samples in each area's light keeps one color from looking different across the space.
A single main color is the simplest way to make connected kitchen, dining and living areas feel cohesive. Light changes across a large open space, so the same color can look different near windows and in interior corners. Test a large sample in several spots before committing.
At natural breaks: an inside corner, a change in wall plane, a trim line such as a chair rail, or a doorway into a separate room. Avoid stopping color in the middle of a flat wall or on an outside corner, where the line looks accidental.
Colors that share an undertone, warm or cool, tend to sit comfortably side by side. Fixed elements such as flooring, countertops, cabinets and fireplaces in an open plan all show at once, so placing samples next to them, as Portola's lime wash data sheet recommends for any color decision, prevents clashes.
Yes, on a wall that has its own purpose, such as behind a fireplace, a dining area or built-ins. Run the accent color from corner to corner so its edges land at inside corners. Deep accent colors may need a tinted primer; Benjamin Moore notes some custom colors require a deep base primer.
Large walls under mixed light show more surface texture as sheen increases. The Gypsum Association's GA-214 recommends Level 5 finish where severe lighting occurs and says paints with sheen above flat are not recommended over Level 4. Matte or eggshell is common on large open-plan walls.
Consistent trim and ceiling colors are the simplest unifier. Using one trim white and one ceiling color throughout lets wall colors change between areas without the space feeling chopped up. Benjamin Moore's Advance trim enamel and its Waterborne Ceiling Paint, for example, are each made for their surface, so the same colors can carry through the whole floor in the right products.

One main color across connected spaces is the most cohesive approach, with variation in separate rooms or on purposeful accent walls. If you use more than one color, change it at an inside corner or trim line, not mid-wall, and choose colors that share an undertone.
At natural breaks: inside corners, changes in wall plane, trim lines such as a chair rail, and doorways into separate rooms. Ending a color on an outside corner or in the middle of a wall looks accidental. Plan the break points before buying paint.
Yes, if there is a clear break and the colors relate. Kitchens often have cabinets and backsplash that already add color, so a quieter wall color there and a related color in the living area can work. Test both side by side in the connecting light.
Matte or eggshell. Large walls lit by windows from different directions reveal surface texture more with higher sheens, and the Gypsum Association's GA-214 says paints with sheen above flat are not recommended over Level 4 finish. Eggshell is a common balance between washability and hiding.
