Ceiling Painting

Ceilings are painted first, with a flat paint made for overhead work that resists spatter and hides imperfections. Benjamin Moore's Waterborne Ceiling Paint is an example: formulated for minimal spatter and ample open time to avoid lap marks, it recoats in 1 to 2 hours.

Why Use Ceiling Paint Instead of Wall Paint?

Ceiling paint is formulated for the job. Benjamin Moore describes its Waterborne Ceiling Paint as an acrylic made specifically for ceilings, with excellent hide, minimal spatter, concealment of common surface imperfections and ample open time to minimize lapping. It lists drywall, acoustical ceiling tile, cured masonry and plaster as uses, at 400 to 450 square feet per gallon.

Why Are Most Ceilings Flat?

Ceilings are lit at a low angle by windows and fixtures, the condition that reveals seams. The Gypsum Association's GA-214 notes that in critical lighting areas flat paints applied over light textures tend to reduce joint photographing, and that paints with sheen above flat are not recommended over Level 4. A flat ceiling finish hides more than any sheen.

How Are Water Stains on a Ceiling Covered?

The leak is fixed first and the drywall checked for softness. Stains that remain are sealed with a stain-blocking primer, because water stains bleed through ordinary paint. Benjamin Moore lists its Fresh Start Undercoater and Primer/Sealer for water stains, smoke damage and nicotine, with a 2 hour recoat time.

Can Textured or Popcorn Ceilings Be Painted?

Yes, carefully. Textured ceilings soak up paint and can loosen if rolled heavily, so they are often sprayed or rolled with light pressure. Benjamin Moore lists new or coated acoustic ceilings among the uses for its Regal Select interior paint. If you are not sure what an older textured ceiling is made of, have a sample tested before any scraping or sanding.

How Long Does a Painted Ceiling Take to Dry?

Benjamin Moore lists its Waterborne Ceiling Paint at 1 hour to touch and 1 to 2 hours to recoat at 77°F and 50% humidity, with a 50°F minimum surface temperature. Two coats can go on the same day, and walls follow once the ceiling is done so any drips land on surfaces not yet painted.

How Much Ceiling Paint Does a Room Need?

A 12 by 14 foot ceiling is 168 square feet. At the 400 to 450 square feet per gallon Benjamin Moore lists for its Waterborne Ceiling Paint, two coats come to under a gallon. Textured and acoustic ceilings absorb more and fall toward the low end of coverage, and a stain-blocking primer over water marks adds its own coat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should ceilings be painted before walls?

Yes. Painting the ceiling first means any drips or roller spatter land on walls that have not been painted yet, and the cut line where ceiling meets wall is finished by the wall paint. Benjamin Moore's Waterborne Ceiling Paint recoats in 1 to 2 hours, so the ceiling can be done early in the day before walls begin.

What color should a ceiling be?

White ceiling paint is the default because it reflects light and hides the most, but tinted ceilings are common in rooms with warm or deep wall colors. Benjamin Moore's Waterborne Ceiling Paint is available in Ceiling White and tint bases. A ceiling tinted to a light version of the wall color can soften the line where they meet.

Why does my ceiling look streaky after painting?

Streaks usually come from lap marks, where paint dried before the next pass overlapped it, or from uneven rolling. Ceiling paints are formulated with longer open time to reduce lapping, and keeping a wet edge while rolling in one direction helps. Strong side light from windows makes streaks more visible.

Can you paint over a water stain on the ceiling?

Not with regular paint alone. Water stains bleed through. After the leak is repaired and the drywall is dry and sound, the stain is sealed with a stain-blocking primer; Benjamin Moore lists its alkyd Fresh Start Undercoater for water stains. Then the whole ceiling, or at least the full plane, is repainted so the patch does not show.
