Kitchen Wall Painting

Kitchen walls collect grease and get wiped often, so painting starts with degreasing and ends with a washable, stain-resistant finish. Premium paints such as Benjamin Moore Regal Select, made with stain release technology, can be washed after two weeks and recoated in 1 to 2 hours.

Why Do Kitchens Need Different Prep?

Cooking leaves a thin film of grease on walls, ceilings and the areas around the range hood, and paint will not bond to it. Benjamin Moore's data sheets for its interior paints require surfaces free of dirt, grease, oil, soap and wax. Walls are washed with a degreasing cleaner and rinsed before patching and priming, and the backsplash edges and window sills near the sink get extra attention.

Which Finish Stands Up to Kitchen Cleaning?

Benjamin Moore describes Regal Select as a durable, washable finish that uses a stain release technology so common household stains come off with soap and water, and it lists the line as ideal for surfaces subject to abuse and soil. Satin or eggshell is common on kitchen walls. For heavy-traffic areas, Benjamin Moore's Scuff-X is engineered for commercial spaces such as cafeterias and lists walls, doors, trim and cabinets.

Are Cabinets Painted at the Same Time?

They can be, but cabinets are a separate system. Walls take wall paint; cabinet doors and boxes take a hard enamel such as Benjamin Moore Advance, which needs 16 hours between coats and 5 to 7 days before heavy use. See cabinet painting for that process.

How Long Is the Kitchen Out of Service?

Wall painting is short: Regal Select is dry to the touch in 1 hour and recoatable in 1 to 2 hours at 77°F and 50% humidity. Appliances are pulled out and covered, counters are protected, and the kitchen is usually usable the same day. Wiping or scrubbing new paint should wait two weeks while it cures.

What About Water and Smoke Stains Above the Range?

Grease and smoke stains can bleed through new paint. Benjamin Moore lists its Fresh Start Undercoater and Primer/Sealer for smoke damage, grease marks and water stains. After degreasing, stained areas are spot primed before the finish coats.

Do Older Kitchens Need Lead-Safe Work?

In homes built before 1978, kitchen walls, trim and window sashes may carry old lead-based paint. Paid work that disturbs more than 6 square feet of painted surface per room is covered by the EPA rule, which requires an EPA-certified firm, containment of the work area and a verified cleanup, important in a room where food is prepared.

What About Backsplashes, Soffits and Range Hoods?

Painted soffits and the wall behind the range collect the most grease, so they get the most thorough cleaning before painting. Glazed tile backsplashes are usually left as tile; Benjamin Moore does list its Fresh Start High-Hiding All Purpose Primer for properly prepared ceramic tile, but notes that adhesion on hard, non-porous surfaces may take 3 to 4 days to develop, so painted tile is best kept away from heat and water.

Frequently Asked Questions

What paint finish is best for kitchen walls?

Eggshell or satin is the usual choice because both can be wiped clean while hiding more wall texture than semi-gloss. Premium lines such as Benjamin Moore Regal Select are formulated for washability even in flatter sheens. Behind the range and sink, a more scrub-resistant product helps; trim and cabinets get a harder enamel.

Do you need to clean kitchen walls before painting?

Yes, always. Grease and cooking residue keep paint from bonding, and paint makers require surfaces free of grease, oil and soap. Walls are washed with a degreaser, rinsed, allowed to dry, then patched and primed. Skipping degreasing is a common reason kitchen paint peels or stays tacky over the stove.

How soon can I wipe newly painted kitchen walls?

Light dusting is fine once the paint is dry, but washing should wait. Benjamin Moore says surfaces painted with Regal Select can be washed after two weeks. Paint is dry to the touch in about an hour but continues to cure and harden for days, and scrubbing too early can burnish or lift the finish.

Can kitchen walls and cabinets be painted the same color?

Yes, but they should use different products. Walls get a washable wall paint, while cabinets need a hard enamel such as Benjamin Moore Advance that is formulated for doors, trim and cabinets and cures over several days. Using the same color in two products is common; using wall paint on cabinets usually leads to chipping and sticking.
