Professional Wallpaper Installation

Wallpaper looks seamless when the wall underneath is smooth, sealed with the right primer or paint, and the paper is laid out from a plumb line using rolls from the same run. Manufacturers such as York spell out each of those steps in their hanging instructions.

How Should Walls Be Prepared for Wallpaper?

York's SureStrip hanging instructions say old wallpaper should be removed and walls should be clean, dry and smooth, with holes and rough areas repaired. The surface should have two coats of new or existing paint in flat, eggshell or semi-gloss, or two coats of a premixed universal wallcovering primer. York says oil-based and general purpose primers are not recommended because they can affect paste adhesion.

How Smooth Does the Wall Have to Be?

The Gypsum Association's GA-214 standard says Level 4 finish is appropriate under wallcoverings, but warns that joints and fasteners must be adequately concealed when the wallcovering is lightweight, has little pattern or has a gloss finish. Thin or shiny papers show every seam, so they need a smoother wall.

Why Do Run Numbers Matter?

Wallpaper is printed in batches. York tells installers to inspect every roll for color, design, quantity and print defects before hanging and to make sure all rolls come from the same run number, noting that warranty claims are limited after paper is cut and hung. Ordering enough paper from one run up front prevents mismatched panels.

How Is Wallpaper Laid Out and Hung?

  1. Start in the least visible corner, such as behind a door.
  2. Mark a plumb line one inch less than the paper width from the corner, so the first strip wraps one inch into the corner (York's example: a mark at 26 inches for 27 inch paper).
  3. Cut strips 4 inches longer than the wall height, leaving 2 inches at top and bottom for trimming.
  4. Activate prepasted paper with water, or apply paste to unpasted paper, following the manufacturer's directions.
  5. Match the pattern, smooth out air, and trim at ceiling and baseboard.

York also says to turn off power and remove switch plates and outlet covers before starting.

Should I Paint or Wallpaper an Accent Wall?

Both work. Wallpaper adds pattern and texture that paint cannot, while paint is faster to change later. If walls are rough or uneven, the extra prep for thin wallpaper can outweigh the difference, and a textured or patterned paper hides more than a solid one.

What Is Booking, and Why Does It Matter?

Booking lets prepasted paper relax before it goes on the wall. York's instructions say to fold each moistened strip toward the middle, pasted sides together, without creasing, then set it aside for 2 to 3 minutes so the paste activates. Paper hung too soon can expand on the wall and open seams as it dries. York also cautions that adding extra paste to its prepasted SureStrip papers can make future removal more difficult.

How Are Seams Handled So They Do Not Show?

York's instructions call for butting each strip against the previous one without overlapping, matching the design at eye level, and rolling seams gently with a seam roller using light pressure so adhesive is not squeezed from the edges. Excess paste is wiped from the face with clean water and a sponge, because residue left to dry on the print surface can damage it. Random-match textures are reverse hung, alternating strip direction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you hang wallpaper over painted walls?

Yes, that is the normal surface. York's hanging instructions call for two coats of new or existing flat, eggshell or semi-gloss paint, or two coats of a universal wallcovering primer. The paint must be sound and clean. York says oil-based and general purpose primers are not recommended under wallcovering because they can affect paste adhesion.

Do you need to remove old wallpaper before hanging new?

Yes. York's hanging instructions say old wallpaper should be removed before new wallcovering goes up. Layering over old paper risks bubbles, seams showing through and the old paper releasing under the moisture of new paste. After removal, the wall is repaired, cleaned of paste residue and sealed with an appropriate wallcovering primer.

How much extra wallpaper should I order?

Enough to cover pattern matching and trimming, all from the same run. York's instructions cut each strip 4 inches longer than the wall height for trimming, and patterned papers lose more to matching repeats. Because rolls from different runs can differ in color, ordering an extra roll from the original run is safer than reordering later.

Is peel-and-stick wallpaper as good as traditional?

It is easier to apply and remove, which suits renters and short-term projects, but adhesion depends heavily on a smooth, clean, cured paint surface, and humidity can loosen it. Traditional pasted papers bond more permanently. The wall prep rules are similar: smooth, sound, clean paint underneath and careful layout from a plumb line.
