Kitchen Cabinet Painting: What You Need to Know Before You Start

By Joseph Assise III  |  April 2026  |  Easton, PA

Kitchen cabinet painting is one of the highest-ROI projects in a home renovation. A cabinet respray can transform an outdated kitchen for $2,000-$5,000 - compared to $15,000-$50,000 for a full cabinet replacement. But it's also one of the easiest projects to do wrong.

Professional Cabinet Painting Process

  1. Remove all doors and hardware - Cabinets must be painted off the hinges for a factory-quality finish. Hardware is removed and labeled for reinstallation.
  2. Clean and degrease - Kitchen cabinets accumulate years of cooking grease. TSP or a degreaser is used to clean every surface before sanding.
  3. Sand all surfaces - Scuff sanding creates adhesion. We use 150-220 grit depending on the surface condition.
  4. Fill imperfections - Dings, holes from old hardware, and dents are filled with wood filler and re-sanded.
  5. Apply bonding primer - A high-adhesion primer seals the surface and prevents topcoat bleed-through and chipping.
  6. Spray finish coats - Cabinet-grade paint (alkyd or waterborne alkyd) is applied via HVLP spray gun for a smooth, brush-mark-free finish. 2-3 coats with light sanding between coats.
  7. Reinstall and hardware update - Doors are rehung and adjusted. New hardware is installed if requested.

Best Colors for Kitchen Cabinets in 2026

  • White or off-white (Benjamin Moore White Dove, Chantilly Lace) - Timeless, broadens the market if selling
  • Navy blue (SW Naval, BM Hale Navy) - On lower cabinets with white uppers for a classic two-tone look
  • Sage green (BM Saybrook Sage, SW Retreat) - Warm and organic, pairs with brass hardware
  • Greige (BM Pale Oak, SW Accessible Beige) - Neutral but warmer than white, very resaleable
  • Charcoal / black (BM Black, SW Tricorn Black) - Bold, dramatic, best in kitchens with strong natural light

Why Professional Cabinet Painting vs. DIY?

Brushed cabinet paint shows every brush stroke. Roller-applied finish shows texture. The only way to get a smooth, factory-quality cabinet finish is spray application - which requires proper equipment, spray setup, and technique. Most DIY cabinet jobs look fine at first but chip within 6-12 months because the prep was inadequate. Our Lehigh Valley cabinet painting includes a 2-year warranty on adhesion and finish quality.
