Kitchen walls have little open space, since cabinets, backsplash and windows cover most of them, so the cost is in degreasing, cutting in around everything, moving appliances and sealing grease or smoke stains. Cabinets are a separate job priced by doors and drawers.
Upper and lower cabinets, backsplash tile, windows and doorways leave short strips of wall between them. Each strip is cut in along cabinet edges, tile and trim. A kitchen may have less paintable wall than a bedroom of the same size but take as long.
Cooking leaves grease on walls and ceilings, and paint will not bond to it. Benjamin Moore's interior paint sheets require surfaces free of dirt, grease, oil, soap and wax. Walls are washed with a degreaser and rinsed before patching and priming.
Grease and smoke stains can bleed through. Benjamin Moore lists its Fresh Start Undercoater and Primer/Sealer for smoke damage, grease marks and water stains, with a 2 hour recoat time. Spot priming these areas is part of a kitchen quote.
A washable one. Benjamin Moore describes Regal Select as durable and washable with stain release technology, ideal for surfaces subject to abuse and soil, at 400 to 450 square feet per gallon. For heavy-use areas, Scuff-X is engineered for commercial spaces such as cafeterias.

Yes. The range, refrigerator and sometimes the dishwasher are pulled out so the walls behind them can be painted, then returned. Light fixtures, outlet covers and window treatments come off, and counters are covered. These steps are a larger share of the labor in a kitchen than in other rooms.
In pre-1978 homes, kitchen walls, trim and window sashes may carry old lead paint. Paid work disturbing more than 6 square feet of painted surface per room falls under the EPA rule, which requires containment and a verified cleanup, important in a room where food is prepared.

Kitchen walls are broken up by cabinets, backsplash and windows, so most of the work is cutting in along edges rather than rolling open wall. Grease must be cleaned off first, appliances moved, and stains above the range primed. Those steps drive the labor.
Spot priming over grease, smoke or water stains is common; Benjamin Moore lists its alkyd Fresh Start Undercoater for smoke damage and grease marks. Clean, sound walls painted with a premium paint and primer such as Regal Select may only need spot priming over repairs.
Eggshell or satin in a washable paint. Benjamin Moore describes Regal Select as washable with stain release technology, and says painted surfaces can be washed after two weeks. Satin cleans more easily; eggshell hides more texture. Around the range and sink, where splatter is heaviest, the more washable sheen usually earns its keep.
Often, once degreasing and prep are done, because premium wall paints such as Regal Select recoat in 1 to 2 hours. Appliances are pulled out and returned, and the kitchen is usually usable the same day. Washing the new paint should wait two weeks.
