Exterior paint lasts as long as its preparation, film and maintenance allow. Paint applied to clean, chalk-free surfaces with the right primer, in two full coats and within the product's temperature range, outlasts the same paint applied in a hurry, and simple upkeep extends it further.
Paint bonds only to what it touches. Benjamin Moore's Aura exterior data sheet requires surfaces that are clean, dry and free of oil, grease, wax, rust, mildew, chalk and loose or scaling paint, says glossy surfaces must be dulled and calls for washing sheltered areas. Paint over chalk or loose old coats fails with them.
Film thickness is protection. Benjamin Moore lists a dry film of 1.4 to 1.8 mils per coat for Aura exterior; a second coat roughly doubles it. Thin spots wear through first on sunny walls and edges. Spreading paint thinner than the published 350 to 450 square feet per gallon to save material leaves less film.
Yes. Paint applied outside its temperature range or on damp surfaces may not form a proper film. Benjamin Moore lists Aura exterior from 35°F to 100°F surface temperature and alkyd wood primers and masonry products from 50°F. Cool, humid conditions lengthen drying, and rain on fresh paint can wash it out.

It varies with preparation, product, color, siding type and sun exposure, so there is no single number. South and west walls and horizontal trim wear first. Clean, chalk-free surfaces, the right primers, two full coats and regular upkeep such as washing and recaulking make paint last much longer than a rushed job.
Painting over chalk, dirt, mildew or loose old paint; skipping primer on bare cedar, redwood or alkaline masonry; applying one thin coat; painting outside the product's temperature range or on damp surfaces; and water getting behind the paint through open joints or from inside the house.
Premium exterior paints are formulated for durability and often have higher solids, but preparation matters more. The Cedar Shake and Shingle Bureau notes that cheap finishes usually cost more in the long run through quicker weathering and poorer coverage. Good paint over poor prep still fails.
Keep it clean and dry. Wash mildew from shaded walls, keep gutters flowing, recaulk open joints, touch up bare wood on sills and trim, and keep shrubs trimmed back from siding. Catching small failures early prevents water from getting behind the paint and spreading peeling.
