Stucco is masonry, so it is painted with masonry rules: cured, clean and dry, sealed if it is alkaline, and finished with a breathable acrylic or a flexible elastomeric that bridges hairline cracks. Benjamin Moore's elastomeric, for example, goes on at up to 20 mils wet and covers only 80 to 100 square feet per gallon.
Stucco is washed, loose or hollow areas are repaired, and cracks are filled with a compatible patch. Benjamin Moore's Aura exterior data sheet says new masonry must cure for 30 days and surfaces with a pH of 10 or more must be sealed or primed with a masonry product before painting. Its Ultra Spec Masonry Sealer lists stucco among its uses and penetrates to seal the surface.
Both are used on stucco. A premium exterior acrylic such as Aura is listed for cured masonry including stucco. Benjamin Moore's Ultra Spec Masonry Elastomeric Waterproofing Coating is a high-build, flexible 100% acrylic applied up to 20 mils wet; it bridges minor surface imperfections, offers 200% elongation and is listed for smooth stucco, block and concrete. Elastomerics suit stucco with hairline cracking.
Because it is applied thick. Benjamin Moore lists its elastomeric at 80 to 100 square feet per gallon with a dry film of 6.3 to 7.8 mils, several times the film of regular exterior paint. On 1,500 square feet of stucco, one coat is roughly 15 to 19 gallons. That thickness is what lets it stretch over fine cracks.
Benjamin Moore lists its elastomeric at a 50°F minimum and 100°F maximum surface temperature, 2 hours to touch and 12 hours to recoat at 77°F and 50% humidity. Its masonry sealer is listed at 50°F minimum and 4 hours to recoat. Stucco jobs are planned for warm, dry stretches.
Yes, uncoated stucco can take a mineral limewash. Portola lists exterior masonry among suggested applications for its lime wash, says raw masonry does not require its undercoat, and notes it should not be applied below 55°F or in direct sun. Previously painted stucco needs a compatible primer first.
Benjamin Moore lists its Ultra Spec Masonry 100% Acrylic Sealer at 200 to 400 square feet per gallon, a wide range because stucco texture and porosity vary so much. Smooth stucco sits at the high end; sand-finish or heavily textured stucco at the low end. The sealer recoats in 4 hours at 77°F and 50% humidity, after which the finish system goes on.
Dirt, mildew and water running off sills and roof edges leave streaks, and white mineral deposits (efflorescence) show where moisture moves through the wall. Benjamin Moore lists its Woodluxe All-In-One Wood Cleaner for stucco as well as wood, to remove dirt and stains from mold, mildew, algae and water. Efflorescence is a sign to look for a water source before painting.

Hairline cracks can be bridged by an elastomeric coating; Benjamin Moore's Ultra Spec Masonry Elastomeric is applied up to 20 mils wet and bridges minor imperfections. Larger or active cracks need repair first, and any water getting behind the stucco must be fixed. Painting over open cracks without repair lets water in behind the coating.
A masonry-rated exterior acrylic or an elastomeric coating, over a masonry sealer where the surface is alkaline. Benjamin Moore lists Aura exterior for cured masonry including stucco, and its Ultra Spec Masonry Sealer for stucco surfaces. Elastomerics are thicker and more flexible, which helps on stucco with fine cracks.
Benjamin Moore's Aura exterior data sheet says new masonry substrates must cure for 30 days before painting, and surfaces with a pH of 10 or more must be primed with a masonry sealer or high-build masonry primer. Painting stucco too soon risks alkali damage to the paint.
It can if water is getting into the wall from behind or above, because elastomerics form a thick film. They work best on sound stucco with only minor cracking and good flashing and drainage. Where moisture is a concern, solve the source first and discuss a more breathable masonry finish.
