Painting Vinyl Siding

Vinyl siding can be painted if the color is light enough or on a manufacturer's vinyl-safe list. Benjamin Moore says not to paint vinyl darker than its original color or with a Light Reflective Value below 57 unless the color is on its approved vinyl palette, because dark colors absorb heat and can warp the panels.

Why Is Color Limited on Vinyl Siding?

Vinyl softens with heat. A darker color absorbs more sunlight, raising the panel temperature until it can buckle or warp. Benjamin Moore's Aura exterior data sheet says not to paint vinyl with any color darker than the original or with a Light Reflective Value of less than 57 unless it is in its approved Colors for Vinyl palette and follows the vinyl manufacturer's guidelines. Sherwin-Williams offers a limited VinylSafe palette of darker colors in Duration Exterior.

How Is Vinyl Siding Prepared?

Vinyl is washed to remove dirt, pollen, chalk and mildew, rinsed and allowed to dry. Benjamin Moore lists its Woodluxe All-In-One Wood Cleaner for vinyl as well as wood. Loose panels are refastened; panels must still be able to move on their nails as they expand and contract.

Does Vinyl Siding Need Primer?

Usually not. Benjamin Moore says that in most cases a primer is not necessary on vinyl siding and vinyl composite; only pitted and porous areas must be primed, for which it recommends its Fresh Start High-Hiding All Purpose Primer.

How Much Paint Does Vinyl Siding Take?

Benjamin Moore lists Aura exterior at 350 to 450 square feet per gallon. For 2,000 square feet of vinyl painted twice, that is about 9 to 11.5 gallons, before trim. Smooth, clean vinyl sits toward the efficient end of the range.

When Can Vinyl Siding Be Painted?

Aura exterior can be applied from 35°F to 100°F surface temperature. Vinyl in direct summer sun can get hot, so walls are best painted when out of direct sun. NOAA 1991-2020 normals for Lehigh Valley International Airport show average July highs of 86.4°F.

What About Trim, Shutters and Downspouts?

Vinyl shutters and trim follow the same color rule as the siding. Aluminum trim and downspouts are nonferrous metal, which Benjamin Moore lists as self-priming for Aura exterior after cleaning and dulling shiny surfaces. Wood trim on a vinyl-sided house is primed where bare and painted like any wood. Painting these parts together keeps the colors coordinated.

Can Vinyl Siding Be Painted in Any Season?

Within the paint's limits, but mild weather is best. Aura exterior can be applied from 35°F to 100°F surface temperature. On cold days vinyl is stiff and contracted; in strong sun it can exceed the maximum surface temperature and expand. Overcast, mild days in late spring and early fall are the most forgiving.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you paint vinyl siding a darker color?

Only within manufacturer limits. Benjamin Moore says not to paint vinyl darker than the original color or with a Light Reflective Value below 57 unless the color is on its approved vinyl palette. Sherwin-Williams offers VinylSafe colors in Duration Exterior that allow a limited selection of darker shades. Going darker without a vinyl-safe color risks warping.

Does painting vinyl siding void the warranty?

It can, depending on the siding manufacturer's terms. Benjamin Moore's data sheet says the color choice should comport with the specific vinyl manufacturer's guidelines, which often address painting and color. Check the siding warranty and the manufacturer's painting guidance before starting, especially if you are considering a color darker than the original.

How long does paint last on vinyl siding?

Properly cleaned vinyl painted with a premium exterior acrylic in a vinyl-safe color holds paint well. Failures usually come from painting over dirt or chalk, or from choosing a color dark enough to make panels move and stress the coating. Shaded walls with mildew need more frequent cleaning.

Is it better to paint or replace vinyl siding?

If the panels are intact and only faded, painting in a vinyl-safe color is far less disruptive than replacement. If panels are cracked, warped or loose across large areas, replacement may make more sense, since paint does not fix damaged panels.
