Painting Aluminum Siding

Aluminum siding takes paint well once its chalky oxidized surface and any oil are removed. Benjamin Moore's current Aura exterior data sheet calls for cleaning metal of contaminants, dulling shiny areas and lists the paint as self-priming on nonferrous metal such as aluminum, applied down to 35°F.

Why Does Old Aluminum Siding Feel Chalky?

The factory finish on aluminum siding weathers into a fine powder over the years. Rub a hand across a sunny wall and color comes off. That chalk has to go: Benjamin Moore's Aura exterior data sheet requires surfaces free of chalk, oil, grease, wax and loose paint before painting, and paint applied over chalk bonds to powder instead of the siding.

How Is Aluminum Siding Prepared?

  1. Wash to remove chalk, dirt and mildew. Benjamin Moore says sheltered areas such as eaves and porch ceilings should be washed because rain never cleans them.
  2. Degrease new or contaminated metal; the Aura sheet calls for an oil and grease emulsifier on new metal surfaces.
  3. Dull shiny spots with very fine sandpaper or a synthetic pad where abrasion is expected, as the sheet recommends for new shiny nonferrous metal.
  4. Treat oxidation spots and rinse well, then let the siding dry.

Does Aluminum Siding Need Primer?

Usually not with a self-priming acrylic. Benjamin Moore lists Aura exterior as self-priming on most properly prepared substrates including nonferrous metals, and its Fresh Start High-Hiding All Purpose Primer is listed for exterior aluminum where a primer is wanted, for example over bare spots or for a big color change. Steel trim or rusted fasteners are ferrous metal and need a rust-inhibiting metal primer.

How Much Paint Does Aluminum Siding Take?

Smooth metal siding sits toward the efficient end of a paint's spread rate. Benjamin Moore lists 350 to 450 square feet per gallon for Aura exterior at a dry film of 1.4 to 1.8 mils. For 1,800 square feet of siding painted twice, that is 3,600 square feet of coverage, or roughly 8 to 10 gallons, before trim and soffits.

Can Dents and Loose Panels Be Fixed First?

Small dents can be filled, but painting will not hide large ones; paint shows the shape of the panel. Loose or buckled panels are refastened before painting. Matching replacement panels is often hard for older aluminum siding, which is one reason homeowners paint rather than patch.

When Can Aluminum Siding Be Painted?

Benjamin Moore's current Aura exterior sheet allows application at 35°F to 100°F surface temperature, and metal heats quickly in sun, so walls in direct afternoon sun can exceed the maximum on hot days. NOAA's 1991-2020 normals for Lehigh Valley International Airport put the median first fall freeze on October 24.

What About Aluminum Trim, Soffits and Gutters?

Aluminum trim coil, soffits and gutters are prepared the same way as aluminum siding: washed, degreased where needed and dulled where shiny. Benjamin Moore lists Aura exterior as self-priming on nonferrous metal. Vented soffits are painted carefully so vents do not clog, and gutters are cleaned inside first so runoff does not streak fresh paint.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you paint aluminum siding?

Yes. Aluminum siding is a good painting surface once it is cleaned of chalk, dirt and oil. Benjamin Moore's Aura exterior data sheet calls for cleaning metal of contaminants and dulling shiny surfaces, and lists Aura as self-priming on nonferrous metals such as aluminum. Two finish coats give an even, durable film.

How do you get chalk off aluminum siding before painting?

Wash it. A cleaner and a soft brush or low-pressure rinse removes the powdery oxidized layer, followed by thorough rinsing. Benjamin Moore lists its Woodluxe All-In-One Wood Cleaner for vinyl and other exterior surfaces as well as wood. Test by rubbing a dry hand on the wall after washing; if color still comes off, wash again before painting.

How long does paint last on aluminum siding?

It depends on prep, sun exposure and color, but properly cleaned aluminum painted with a premium exterior acrylic holds paint well because metal does not swell and shrink with moisture the way wood does. Chalk left on the surface is the main reason paint fails early, so washing and a dry, clean surface matter more than the product.

Can aluminum siding be painted a dark color?

Yes, aluminum does not warp the way vinyl can, but dark colors absorb more heat and the metal expands and contracts more. Paint applied in strong sun on a dark color can also exceed the 100°F maximum surface temperature Benjamin Moore lists for Aura exterior. Painting shaded walls first and avoiding peak sun helps.
