Factory-primed fiber cement siding should get its finish coat soon after installation; James Hardie's installation requirements say primed products must be painted within 180 days, with 100% acrylic topcoats and never on wet siding. Repainting older fiber cement follows normal exterior prep: wash, repair, caulk, two coats.
James Hardie's installation requirements state that factory-primed James Hardie products must be painted within 180 days of installation, that 100% acrylic topcoats are recommended, and not to paint when the siding is wet. They also say not to use stain, oil or alkyd base paint, or powder coatings on James Hardie products.
Factory-primed boards already have one. For repaints and unprimed boards, Benjamin Moore's Aura exterior data sheet lists Aura as self-priming over fiber cement siding and poured concrete. Fiber cement is a cement product, so very alkaline surfaces (pH of 10 or more) call for a masonry sealer or high-build masonry primer first, according to the same sheet.
Yes. Fiber cement does not warp from heat the way vinyl can, so the vinyl color limits do not apply. Dark colors fade faster in strong sun, so they suit walls that get less direct afternoon light.
Benjamin Moore lists 350 to 450 square feet per gallon for Aura exterior. Textured fiber cement, such as boards with a cedar-grain pattern, falls toward the lower end of that range. For 2,200 square feet of siding painted twice, that is roughly 10 to 12.5 gallons before trim.
Benjamin Moore's current Aura exterior sheet allows application from 35°F to 100°F surface temperature; any masonry sealer used under it needs 50°F. Because Hardie says not to paint wet siding, mornings with heavy dew are best avoided.
Field-cut edges and exposed fasteners are the weak points of fiber cement. During repaints, cracked or exposed edges at butt joints and trim are sealed and spot primed, and any face-nailed fasteners are set and touched up so water does not wick in. A 100% acrylic exterior paint, which James Hardie recommends, then goes over the whole wall.
Fiber cement is durable but should not be blasted with high pressure, which can erode the surface and drive water into joints. A gentle wash with a cleaner made for exterior surfaces, a good rinse and full drying time are enough. James Hardie's requirements say not to paint when the siding is wet.

Factory-primed fiber cement does: James Hardie's installation requirements say factory-primed products must be painted within 180 days of installation. Prefinished boards with a factory color finish do not need paint at installation, though they can be repainted later after cleaning and with a 100% acrylic exterior paint.
A 100% acrylic exterior paint. James Hardie's installation requirements recommend 100% acrylic topcoats and say not to use stain, oil or alkyd base paint, or powder coatings on its products. Benjamin Moore lists its Aura exterior as self-priming over fiber cement siding, applied at 35°F or warmer.
No. James Hardie's installation requirements specifically say not to paint when wet, and paint makers require clean, dry surfaces. After washing or rain, the siding needs time to dry, and dew-soaked boards on cool mornings should dry before painting starts.
It depends on color, sun exposure and the quality of the original finish, but fiber cement is dimensionally stable and holds paint well. South and west walls fade first. Repainting is due when color has faded noticeably, chalk rubs off on your hand, or caulked joints have opened.
