Best Time to Paint the Exterior of Your Home in the Lehigh Valley

Late May through September is the most reliable window. NOAA's 1991-2020 normals for Lehigh Valley International Airport put the median last spring frost on April 20 and the first fall frost on October 24, and the products in the paint system, especially primers, set the real temperature floor.

What Do Lehigh Valley Temperatures Look Like Month by Month?

These are NOAA's 1991-2020 monthly normals for Lehigh Valley International Airport, the region's long-term weather station. Average lows matter most, because paint needs the air and the surface to stay above its minimum while it dries.

Which Product Sets the Minimum Temperature?

The one with the highest floor. Benjamin Moore's current Aura exterior sheet and Sherwin-Williams Duration Exterior both allow application down to 35°F, but other parts of a typical system need more warmth:

A job that includes a cedar primer or masonry sealer is really a 50°F job.

Why Do Humidity and Rain Matter as Much as Temperature?

Waterborne paint dries by evaporation. Benjamin Moore lists a 1 hour dry to touch and 4 hour recoat for Aura exterior at 77°F and 50% relative humidity and warns that high humidity and cool temperatures lengthen dry, recoat and service times. July is the wettest month on average at 5.30 inches, and the airport averages about 81 days a year with a tenth of an inch of rain or more.

Is Spring or Fall Better for Exterior Painting?

Both can work; each has a trap. In spring, April's average low of 40.3°F is below the 50°F floor of alkyd primers and masonry products, and wood soaked over winter needs drying time. In fall, September is often ideal (77.4°F high, 55.2°F low), but by October the average low is 43.8°F and the median first freeze is October 24. See the spring checklist and fall guide.

Is Summer Too Hot to Paint?

Usually not, but heat has limits too. Benjamin Moore lists a 100°F maximum surface temperature for Aura exterior and 90°F for many primers and stains. Sun-baked south and west walls can exceed that even when the air is cooler, so painters follow the shade around the house. See summer painting.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best month to paint a house exterior in the Lehigh Valley?

June and September are usually the best. NOAA 1991-2020 normals for Lehigh Valley International Airport show average lows of 59.9°F in June and 55.2°F in September, comfortably above the 50°F floor of alkyd primers and masonry products, with fewer rainy days than July. May and early October also work when the forecast is dry and nights stay mild.

Is 40 degrees too cold to paint outside?

It depends on every product in the system. Benjamin Moore's current Aura exterior and Sherwin-Williams Duration Exterior are rated to 35°F, but alkyd wood primers and masonry sealers need 50°F, and Woodluxe water-based stains need 40°F. Shaded surfaces can be colder than the air, so a 40°F morning usually means waiting for sunny walls to warm or rescheduling primer work.

How long does exterior paint need to dry before rain?

It depends on temperature and humidity. Benjamin Moore lists 1 hour to dry to the touch and 4 hours to recoat for Aura exterior at 77°F and 50% relative humidity, and says high humidity and cool temperatures extend those times. In practice, exterior painting is best avoided when rain is forecast later the same day, and dew-soaked surfaces should dry before painting starts.

When is the first frost in the Lehigh Valley?

NOAA's 1991-2020 normals for Lehigh Valley International Airport put the median first fall freeze (32°F) on October 24 and the median last spring freeze on April 20. The median first 36°F night arrives earlier, around October 12, and the first 28°F night around November 4. In about half of years the first freeze comes before the median date.
