Its acrylic Fresh Start 046 primer is listed down to 40°F, and its alkyd Fresh Start Undercoater needs 50°F. Keeping the heat on during painting and drying keeps every product in range.
Spaces without heat. Enclosed porches, garages, basements and closets on outside walls can drop below 50°F. Benjamin Moore's garage floor coating also needs 50°F and must not be applied within 5°F of the dew point. Portable heat or waiting for spring are the options.
Low-VOC paints help: Benjamin Moore lists Regal Select at under 50 grams per liter of VOC. Cracking a window in the room being painted while keeping the heat on, and running the HVAC fan, moves air without dropping room temperature below the paint's minimum. Avoid opening windows so wide that walls and the air near them cool below 50°F.
It can. Every Benjamin Moore interior sheet notes that dry, recoat and service times are listed at 77°F and 50% humidity and that cooler conditions lengthen them. A 60°F room dries slower than a 72°F room. Advance, which needs 16 hours to recoat and 5 to 7 days before heavy use, is the most sensitive to cool rooms.
Whole-house interior repaints, trim and door enamel work, cabinet painting and wallpaper projects all suit winter, because they depend on room temperature rather than weather. Cabinet enamel needs the most time: Benjamin Moore lists 16 hours between coats of Advance and 5 to 7 days before heavy use, so a kitchen project is best started with that cure time planned in.
