Kitchen Cabinet Painting in the Lehigh Valley

Painted cabinets last when they are degreased, deglossed and primed, then finished with a hard enamel and given time to cure. Benjamin Moore's Advance enamel, for example, needs 16 hours between coats and 5 to 7 days before heavy use, which is why cabinet work is planned around the kitchen schedule.

What Steps Make Painted Cabinets Last?

  1. Remove and label. Doors, drawer fronts and hardware come off so each piece can be painted flat and returned to its spot.
  2. Degrease. Kitchen cabinets carry cooking grease. Benjamin Moore's Advance data sheet requires surfaces free of dirt, dust, grease, oil, soap and wax.
  3. Degloss. The same sheet says glossy areas should be dulled so the new coating can grip.
  4. Prime. New wood is fully primed; previously painted surfaces are primed or spot primed. For wood, Benjamin Moore points to its Fresh Start high-hiding primer, and for stain-prone oak or knots an alkyd undercoater blocks tannin bleed.
  5. Two enamel coats. Boxes are brushed and rolled in place; doors are finished separately.

Why Use an Enamel Instead of Wall Paint?

Cabinets are handled every day. Benjamin Moore describes Advance as a waterborne alkyd enamel that levels like conventional oil paint, dries to a tough finish that stands up to repeated washing, and cleans up with water. It lists Advance for interior doors, trim and cabinets, in satin and semi-gloss. Wall paints are formulated for walls and stay softer.

How Long Do Painted Cabinets Take to Dry and Cure?

Longer than walls. Benjamin Moore lists Advance as dry to the touch in 4 to 6 hours and ready to recoat in 16 hours at 77°F and 50% humidity. It says full hardness and adhesion develop over time and that shelves and tabletops should not face heavy abrasion or return to service for at least 5 to 7 days. The application range is 50°F to 90°F surface temperature, and cooler or more humid air extends every one of those times.

How Much Enamel Does a Kitchen Use?

Less than you might expect by volume, more by labor. Advance is listed at 400 to 500 square feet per gallon. Cabinet surfaces are mostly edges, frames and recessed panels, so the real driver is the number of doors and drawer fronts, not gallons. A primer such as Fresh Start 046 adds its own coat at 400 to 450 square feet per gallon.

What If the Cabinets Are in an Older Home?

Cabinets in a home built before 1978 may carry old lead-based paint under newer coats. Under the EPA rule, paid work that disturbs more than 6 square feet of painted surface in a room must be done by an EPA-certified firm using lead-safe practices: containment, no unshrouded power sanding and a verified cleanup. Factory-finished cabinets installed later are a different case, so the build date of the cabinets matters.

Can Laminate or Thermofoil Cabinets Be Painted?

Some can, with a bonding primer. Benjamin Moore lists its Fresh Start High-Hiding All Purpose Primer for Formica, Masonite and ceramic tile as well as wood, and notes that on hard, non-porous surfaces, maximum adhesion and hardness may take 3 to 4 days to develop. Peeling thermofoil, which is a vinyl film over fiberboard, is a different case: if the film is already lifting, paint will not hold it down, and replacement doors are often the better fix.

Do Kitchen Humidity and Temperature Matter?

Yes. Benjamin Moore lists a 50°F to 90°F surface temperature range for Advance and says high humidity or cooler temperatures prolong dry, recoat and cure times. Steam from cooking and dishwashers raises humidity around upper cabinets and the sink base, so ventilation during and after painting helps the enamel harden on schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you paint over stained wood cabinets?

Yes, with the right prep. Stained and lacquered cabinets are glossy and often greasy, so they are cleaned, deglossed and primed before any finish. Oak and other open-grain or tannin-rich woods can bleed through light colors, which is why Benjamin Moore lists an alkyd undercoater such as Fresh Start 032 for tannin bleed. Two coats of a hard enamel such as Advance then provide the finish.

How long do I have to stay out of the kitchen?

The kitchen stays usable during most of the job, but painted surfaces need time. Benjamin Moore lists Advance at 16 hours between coats and says full hardness develops over time, with shelves and tabletops kept from heavy use for at least 5 to 7 days. Doors and drawers are rehung once dry, and the first week is for gentle use while the enamel finishes curing.

Is cabinet painting better than refacing?

It depends on the boxes. Painting keeps the existing doors and frames and changes the finish; refacing replaces the door and drawer fronts and covers the frames with new veneer. If the cabinet boxes and doors are solid and the layout works, painting is the less invasive option. If doors are damaged, warped or the style is wrong, refacing or replacement may suit better. Our cabinet painting vs refacing comparison covers the tradeoffs in more detail.

What sheen is best for kitchen cabinets?

Satin and semi-gloss are the usual choices. Benjamin Moore makes Advance in both, and higher sheen generally cleans more easily while showing more surface flaws. Semi-gloss suits smooth, well-prepared doors in busy kitchens; satin softens the look and hides minor imperfections in older or grained doors. Whatever the sheen, the prep and primer underneath decide how long the finish lasts.
