Interior House Painting in the Lehigh Valley

Good interior painting is repair and prep first, then two coats of a quality finish in the right sheen. Paint makers' data sheets set the dry times, temperatures and spread rates, and in homes built before 1978 the EPA lead rule decides how old paint can be sanded and cleaned up.

What Is Included in a Typical Interior Paint Job?

A room is prepared before any finish goes on: furniture is moved and covered, floors are protected, nail holes and cracks are filled and sanded, glossy areas are dulled, and stains are spot primed. Benjamin Moore's Regal Select data sheet requires surfaces that are clean, dry and free of dirt, grease, wax, mildew and peeling paint. Ceilings, walls and trim are then painted in that order so drips from above never land on finished work.

How Many Coats Does an Interior Wall Need?

Two. Benjamin Moore says that although one-coat coverage is sometimes achievable with Regal Select, it recommends two coats for full color development and performance, and two coats on bare surfaces. The data sheet lists 400 to 450 square feet per gallon, so a 12 by 14 foot room with 8 foot walls (about 416 square feet of wall before doors and windows) uses roughly 2 gallons for two coats.

Which Sheen Should I Use in Each Room?

Sheen changes both appearance and washability. Regal Select is made in matte, eggshell, satin/pearl and semi-gloss, and all four are 100% acrylic paint and primer. Flatter sheens hide wall imperfections better; higher sheens clean more easily but show every bump. Doors and trim usually get a harder enamel such as Benjamin Moore Advance, a waterborne alkyd. See interior paint finishes explained.

How Smooth Do the Walls Need to Be?

The Gypsum Association's GA-214 standard ties drywall finish level to the paint. Level 4 is meant for flat paints, light textures and wallcoverings, and it says paints with sheen other than flat are not recommended over Level 4. Level 5 adds a skim coat over the entire surface and is recommended where severe lighting conditions occur, such as long walls lit from the side. Glossier paint and raking light both need smoother walls.

How Long Before a Painted Room Can Be Used?

Benjamin Moore lists Regal Select as dry to the touch in 1 hour and ready to recoat in 1 to 2 hours at 77°F and 50% humidity, with washing possible after two weeks. The application window is 50°F to 90°F surface temperature, and cooler or more humid air slows drying. Most rooms are usable the same day, but scrubbing and hanging heavy items should wait.

Does the EPA Lead Rule Apply Inside My House?

Yes, in homes built before 1978. The rule covers paid work that disturbs more than 6 square feet of painted surface per room. Covered work requires an EPA-certified firm, the Renovate Right pamphlet before work begins, and lead-safe practices including containment and cleanup; power sanding is allowed only with a shroud and HEPA vacuum. In Lehigh and Northampton counties, Census estimates show most homes were built before 1980.

What Stains and Problems Need Special Primer?

Some marks bleed through any amount of wall paint. Benjamin Moore lists its alkyd Fresh Start Undercoater and Primer/Sealer for water stains, tannin bleed, smoke damage, markers, crayons, pens, pencils and nicotine, at 400 to 500 square feet per gallon with a 2 hour recoat time. Patched drywall and plaster are a different issue: they absorb paint differently from the surrounding wall, which is why the Gypsum Association recommends priming the whole prepared surface so repairs do not show as dull spots.

How Are Big Color Changes Handled?

Going from dark to light, or light to a deep accent color, usually takes a primer plus two finish coats. Benjamin Moore calls its Fresh Start High-Hiding All Purpose Primer the go-to for significant color change, and its Advance data sheet recommends tinting the primer to the approximate shade of the finish coat when a big change is planned. Some custom deep colors also need a deep base primer tinted to a special formula. See painting over dark colors.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to paint a room?

Prep usually takes as long as painting. Filling, sanding and spot priming come first, then two coats of finish. Benjamin Moore lists a 1 to 2 hour recoat time for Regal Select at 77°F and 50% humidity, so walls, ceiling and trim in an average bedroom can often be finished in a day by an experienced painter, while rooms needing wall repair, color changes or lead-safe setup take longer.

Do I need primer if the paint says paint and primer?

Sometimes. Benjamin Moore describes Regal Select as self-priming on most properly prepared surfaces, but it still recommends two coats on bare surfaces and special-purpose primers for stains, glossy surfaces or dramatic color changes. Water stains, smoke and tannin bleed need a stain-blocking primer such as Fresh Start Undercoater, and large color changes are easier with a tinted high-hiding primer.

Is low-VOC interior paint worth it?

Most premium interior paints are now low-VOC. Benjamin Moore lists Regal Select at under 50 grams per liter of VOC, and the Advance trim enamel at 48.5 grams per liter for the satin finish. Lower VOC content generally means less solvent odor during and after painting, though ventilation is still recommended while paint dries. Primers vary more: the alkyd Fresh Start Undercoater is listed under 350 grams per liter.

Can you paint in winter?

Interior painting works year-round as long as the room stays warm. Benjamin Moore lists a minimum surface temperature of 50°F for Regal Select and Advance, so heated rooms are fine, but unheated porches, garages and closets against cold exterior walls can fall below that. Cool, humid conditions lengthen dry and recoat times, so keep the heat on and allow extra time between coats.
