Trim and doors take more wear than walls, so they get a harder enamel, careful caulking and sanding, and patience between coats. Benjamin Moore's Advance semi-gloss, a common trim enamel, needs 16 hours to recoat and 5 to 7 days to reach working hardness.
Door edges, casings, baseboards and window stools are bumped, scuffed and cleaned more than any wall. Benjamin Moore lists its Advance waterborne alkyd for interior doors, trim and cabinets and describes it as a tough, washable finish that levels like conventional oil paint while cleaning up with water. Semi-gloss is the traditional trim sheen because it wipes clean and contrasts with flatter walls.
Benjamin Moore lists Advance semi-gloss as dry to the touch in 4 to 6 hours and ready to recoat in 16 hours at 77°F and 50% humidity, applied between 50°F and 90°F. It says full hardness develops over time and recommends at least 5 to 7 days before heavy abrasion. Doors are often left slightly open while drying so they do not stick to the stops.
In homes built before 1978, trim and doors are among the surfaces most likely to carry old lead-based paint under newer coats, and friction surfaces like door jambs and window sashes wear it into dust. Paid work disturbing more than 6 square feet of painted surface per room falls under the EPA rule, which requires an EPA-certified firm, containment, no unshrouded power sanding and a verified cleanup.
Baseboards collect scuffs from vacuums and shoes, and stair balusters and handrails are touched constantly. They get the same enamel system as doors. See our baseboard painting page for how floors and carpet are protected along the base.
Less than people expect. A standard 30 by 80 inch door is about 16.7 square feet per side, so two coats on both sides is roughly 67 square feet. At the 400 to 500 square feet per gallon Benjamin Moore lists for Advance semi-gloss, that is well under a quarter gallon per door, plus the jamb and casing. Labor, not material, is what drives trim work: sanding, caulking, cutting crisp lines and waiting 16 hours between coats.
Yes, with a stain-blocking primer. Oak, cedar and other tannin-rich woods bleed brown or yellow through light paint. Benjamin Moore lists its alkyd Fresh Start Undercoater and Primer/Sealer for tannin bleed and tannin-rich woods, at a 2 hour recoat time and a 50°F minimum application temperature. The varnish or stain finish is cleaned and sanded to dull it first so the primer can bond.

Semi-gloss is traditional because it cleans easily and contrasts with flatter wall paint, but satin is common in homes with older, less perfect woodwork because it shows fewer flaws. Benjamin Moore makes its Advance trim enamel in both satin and semi-gloss. Whichever you choose, keep the sheen consistent on doors and casings throughout a floor so the finish looks deliberate.
Yes, with preparation. Old oil-based enamel is hard and glossy, so it is cleaned and sanded to dull the surface, then primed with a bonding primer before a waterborne finish. Benjamin Moore's Advance data sheet says glossy areas should be dulled and lists primers for previously painted surfaces. Skipping the scuff sanding is the most common reason waterborne paint peels off old oil trim.
Benjamin Moore lists its Advance enamel as dry to the touch in 4 to 6 hours and recoatable in 16 hours, with full hardness developing over several days. Doors can be closed carefully once dry to the touch, but contact with the stops and weatherstripping can still mark the finish for the first several days. Leaving doors slightly open overnight between coats helps.
Yes. Window casings are part of a trim package, and sashes can be painted with the same enamel. In homes built before 1978, window sashes and jambs are friction surfaces where old lead paint can turn to dust, so lead-safe practices under the EPA rule apply when the work disturbs more than 6 square feet of paint in a room.
